|Northern Mid-Atlantic Ridge Crest: 37°N (Azores) to 63°N (Iceland). |
For the benefit of MAR-ECO participants and the planning process, the bathymetry of the Mid-Atlantic Ridge (between Iceland and the Azores) has been compiled by Bramley J. Murton, National Oceanography Centre, Southampton, UK. The objective of the MAR-ECO bathymetry compilation project was to identify and interrogate data resources for the bathymetry. Specifically these resources would be used to provide overviews of the data and its sources, and be combined digitally to make new charts. These resources will be used in the planning and field phases of the MAR-ECO project.
The bathymetry compilation is based on five major data sources, plus additional, incidental sources.
The major sources are:
Sandwell and Smith's predicted bathymetry (2 minute grid)
Smith and Sandwell's global marine gravity anomaly data (2 minute grid).
Incidental sources: Charles Darwin multibeam synthesis (for data between 57 - 63N); WIMPOLE commercial multibeam data (45-46N); Jean Goslin's multibeam data (42-45N). GLORIA data for the Charlie Gibbs fracture zone
