On 26 October '09, the Russian research vessel 'Akademik Ioffe' called into Las Palmas inthe Canary Islands to pick up a scientific party from Brazil, Uruguay and South Africa. Together with MAR-ECO partners from Russia already onboard, the team will carry out exploratory biodiversity studies on the mid-Atlantic Ridge and adjacent seamounts. This is the first dedicated effort serving the South Atlantic MAR-ECO project.
The team is led by Andrey Gebruk from Russia and Angel Perez from Brazil, both long-term members of MAR-ECO. The scientists will study hydrography, and collect samples of zooplankton, micronekton and benthos at selected sites (see map). The total number of working days is unfortunately only 9, but this cruise is hopefully only the first cruise in a series. The cruise ends on November 30th in Cape Town.
