The Luminous Deep
MAR-ECO’s incredible images and experiences of the deep sea have once again inspired non-scientists to create a beautiful testament to this little known part of our globe.
|“The Luminous Deep” is a short, three-minute, animated documentary made by Amy Scott-Murray and Kevin Adams, two final-year Animation students at Duncan of Jordanstone College of Art, at the University of Dundee . A number of MAR-ECO researchers Aberdeen University’s Oceanlab acted as scientific advisors for the animation including Monty Priede, Nicola King, Amy Heger and Jessica Craig . |
The animation’s press release explains that: “we learn the fate of a dead whale that sinks to the darkness of the seabed, and how its carcass can come alight by nourishing a huge interconnected community of scavengers and predators. Most of these creatures produce glowing lights that researchers theorise would create a brilliant firework display in the abyssal night.”
The animation is available in 1080 HD or standard definition, and is a total of 3mins 4secs long. See a trailer version.
|Scott-Murray and Adams graduated this spring and received top honours for their animation. In addition the film has been selected to participate in the annual student animation competition Siggraph 08, which will be held in Los Angeles, 11-15 August 2008.|
