Daylight penetrates down to a maximum of 1000 m, however most natural light is gone before you reach 500 m. The distance that light penetrates completely depends on how clear the water is. If the water has a lot of particles in it the light is absorbed quicker.
Light also consists of different wavelengths and red light is absorbed first. This is why a lot of deep-sea animals use red to camouflge themselves.

No, light disappears rapidly. For the human eye, it gets dark after the first 100 meters. There is complete darkness after 1000 m depth...a part from biological light, or bioluminescence. This is light produced by animals and has different purposes, such as avoiding predation, attracting preys, communicating with an individual of the opposite sex. Bioluminescence is quite spectacular seing from a submersible!
